Microsemi Introduces the LX8580A LDO Regulator

August 29, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Microsemi Corp. (Irvine, CA) announced that it has introduced a new 7.5A LDO regulator for use with advanced video graphics controllers, microprocessors and microcontrollers. The new LX8580A features include a 650mV dropout at 7.5A output current and 250mV at 3A, fast transient response, remote-voltage sensing, 1mV load regulation, and adjustable output.

The LX8580A can be used with separate voltage supplies for control and power sections, allowing a power regulation dropout voltage as low as 100mV at 1.5A, or can be used in a single-voltage supply configuration as well. It is suitable for generating a secondary 2V to 2.85V low-voltage supply, on motherboard designs, from a 3.3V supply.

"The LX8580A's performance specifications were targeted specifically to make it an ideal power supply for 3D graphics controllers for use in animation workstations, game boxes and solid

modeling applications that can take advantage of its low 250mV maximum dropout," said Kelly Jones, vice president and general manager at the company's power-management division.

The LX8580A is supplied in a choice of three five-pin plastic packages: the TO-220, TO-263 and Microsemi's S-PAK. The S-PAK is

priced at $0.58 for 10,000-unit pieces. It is currently available for sampling and volume production.
