January 24, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Micrel Semiconductor Inc. (San Jose, CA) introduced the MIC29311, claimed to be the industry's first low-dropout (LDO) regulator optimized for Universal Serial Bus (USB) host or self-powered hub applications. Available in TO-220-5 and TO-263-5 packages, the MIC29311 is designed to provide output current up to 3.0A, at 5.1V +/-3 percent. The device provides a minimum of 4.75V to each USB port, which can draw up to 500mA of current.

The MIC29311 is priced from $2.16 in quantities of 1,000 pieces.
