MGE UPS Systems Introduces the New Pulsar Esprit SLR

October 22, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

MGE UPS Systems (Costa Mesa, CA) introduced the Pulsar Esprit SLR, which the company claims to be the smallest server-grade UPS in the industry capable of delivering high-level network system protection. The new SLR comes in 3kVA and 4kVA models, provides 24 x 7 power availability, and expandable battery options. It stands only 3U high and provides protection for up to eight servers associated with peripherals such as storage and backup devices.

In order to ensure reliability and rapid recharging, the SLR was designed so that users can configure it to provide as much backup time as they desire with options for redundant batteries with chargers. To ease installation, MGE designers tried to make the SLR sleek and compact, with simple connections and power outlets.

All Esprit SLR models feature a suite of communications capabilities using a USB interface. A standard RS232 port is also included. UPS-to-server communications are intended to ensure graceful shutdown when extended power outages deplete batteries, and inform network administrators of other power-related events. In addition, Windows 2000 includes drivers for the MGE Esprit Series that automatically install a dedicated power panel to secure the operating system during a prolonged blackout. The SLR incorporates XML Internet-based management. Using XML tags to perform automatic actions, users have the ability to remotely control and monitor the UPS via the Internet.

The Pulsar Esprit SLR UPSs are priced starting at $1,499 for the 3kVA model.
