Maxwell Intros BCAP0350 D Cell Ultracapacitor

March 28, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Maxwell Technologies Inc. (San Diego, CA) announced its new BCAP0350 D Cell BOOSTCAP ultracapacitor based on an industry-standard form factor. The D Cell product provides a low-cost, reliable, standard-sized, energy storage and power delivery component for seamless and rapid integration into a variety of applications.

The new D Cell provides benefits to the transportation, industrial and renewable energy markets, where long product life cycles hinder significant product redesigns. In the transportation market, the D Cell can be integrated to power initial acceleration, operate electrical sub-systems, and recapture energy from braking for cleaner, more fuel-efficient hybrid-electric/internal-combustion automobiles. In mission-critical industrial applications, designers now have a lightweight, durable and cost-effective solution that requires no maintenance.

The new BCAP0350 features 21 J per cc; a 10-year-life capability; delivery of more than 500,000 discharge-recharge cycles; reverse-polarity resistance; a capacitance of 350 F (DCC, 25 degrees C); a 2.5 V rating; a round, double-ended design measuring 61.5 mm x 33 mm; and a weight of 60 g.

The D Cell ultracapacitor is priced at $15 in quantities of 1,000, and below $10 in high volume with general availability in four to six weeks.
