Maxim Integrated Products Intros MAX8880/MAX8881 LDOs

November 29, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Maxim Integrated Products (Sunnyvale, CA) introduced the MAX8880/MAX8881 ultra-low-supply-current low-dropout linear regulators. Designed for portable applications, these devices have PMOS pass elements to maintain an ultra-low supply current of 3.5µA throughout their entire operating range and in dropout. Despite their low power consumption, they deliver 200mA, have an output accuracy of plus or minus two percent, and require 1µF output capacitance to achieve their best load-transient response.

Other features include an input voltage range of 2.5V to 12V, reverse battery protection, short-circuit protection and thermal protection. Their small size, high output current and ultra-low quiescent supply current make these devices suitable for µP and DSP supplies in wireless handsets, personal digital assistants and other low-power hand-held equipment.

The MAX8880 has an output voltage that is adjustable throughout the 1.25V to 5V range, while the MAX8881 is available in factory-preset 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V and 5V output voltages.

The MAX8880/MAX8881 are available in 6-pin SOT23 packages and are specified for the extended-industrial temperature range, from -40 degrees C to 85 degrees C. Prices start at $0.86 in quantities of 1,000 and up.
