Maxim Integrated Products Inc. (Irvine, CA) announced its new MAX1938 dual-phase, PWM, step-down, dc/dc controller, which is designed for use in CPU core supplies found in desktops, notebooks and blade servers. The MAX1938 controller features the company's proprietary Quick PWM architecture that allows the IC to respond to a step-load transient within 300ns, reducing the number of output capacitors.

The 28-pin QSOP device also features a 0.75-percent output accuracy and fast active-voltage positioning, further reducing the number of output capacitors. The MAX1938 also uses 6V gate drivers that allow fewer, less-expensive MOSFETs on the design as compared to 5V gate drivers in multi-phase solutions. The controller also provides remote output-voltage sensing and allows for loss-less current sensing, short-circuit shutdown and over-voltage protection. It is specified for use over the extended industrial temperature range.
