Kollmorgen Releases PLATINUM Direct Drive Linear Series

November 07, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Kollmorgen (Radford, VA) recently announced the release of its expanded line of PLATINUM Direct Drive Linear (DDL) Series. The PLATINUM DDL Series is a frameless permanent magnet brushless servomotor.

According to Kollmorgen, one of the key benefits of direct drive technology is the direct coupling of the linear motor to the load. The PLATINUM DDL is designed to provide higher throughput, accuracy and zero maintenance and is available in two types: Ironcore (high force) and Ironless (low force). Ironcore motors feature peak force from 43 to 3,500lbf and are designed to have high rated force per frame size, high thermal motor constant and low cogging. Ironless (slotless) motors feature peak force from 13 to 360lbf. These motors have no attractive force between the frameless components and have zero cogging for smooth motion.

"The PLATINUM DDL Series features a modular design with a wide range of size and coil windings. Standard options such as stainless steel covers and water cooled versions are also available. Developments in permanent magnet material, power semiconductors and microprocessor technology has allowed us to improve the linear motor's performance and, at the same time, lower its costs," says Claude Chirignan, Kollmorgens' technical support manager for linear motors. "Linear motors are now the best alternative for many motion control applications that require high performance, low maintenance and smooth, quiet operation."
