Japans Ministry of Economy, Trade, & Industry (METI) announced what it is calling its first "action plan" aimed at promoting the wider implementation of solar power generation, with a specific focus on the public sector. The government is planning to subsidize half the cost of installing solar power generation systems at public facilities, including airports, railway stations and highway rest areas.
The government has set a goal of increasing the amount of solar power generation by 10 times the current level in 2020 and 40 times in 2030. The government claims that it is vital to facilitate the introduction of solar power generation at public facilities, in addition to use in the household and private sectors. Those public facilities run by companies are currently able to receive subsidies representing one-third of the total cost.
