General Motors Issues Recall on EV1 Electric Cars and Chevrolet S-10 Pickups

March 02, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

General Motors Corp. (Detroit, MI) recently announced that it is recalling about half of all the EV1 electric cars it has leased since 1996, and all of its battery-powered Chevrolet S-10 pickups, because of a fire hazard. The company announced it has told owners of about 450 1997 EV1 coupes, and 450 1997-1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickups to stop driving the vehicles.

The EV1s and S-10s run off battery packs that have to be charged with a special system provided by General Motors. The company said a part in the vehicles' charging ports can overheat or possibly catch fire during charging. The company has asked owners to stop driving so they would not have to charge the vehicles, thus avoiding the risk of fire.
