General Motors Announces Repair Plans for Recalled EV1 Coupes

March 26, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

General Motors Corp. (Detroit, MI) has announced that it has devised a repair for 450 1996 EV1 electric-powered coupes it recalled earlier this month, but it will not be ready until 2001. Due to the length of time before the repairs can be made, the company has announced that it would terminate its leases on the cars and offer refunds of some payments to current leaseholders.

General Motors only sells EV1s through leases in the southwestern US; the company is still selling 1999 versions that were not part of the recall. The car was not built in 1997 or 1998.
