Exar Broadens PowerBlox™ Family with High Efficiency 3Amp Regulator

April 28, 2013 by Jeff Shepard

Exar Corporation today announced the availability of the XRP7675, a new synchronous Pulse Frequency Modulation/Pulse Width Modulation (PFM/PWM) step down voltage regulator with a maximum load current of 3 Amps and operating input voltage up to 18V. The XRP7675 offers greater than 90% efficiency over a wide output current range and is ideal for energy efficient and Energy Star compliant products requiring constantly on power supplies.

The XRP7675 is optimized for 5V and 12V inputs with a programmable output voltage down to 0.925V. Power supplies typically found in audio-video equipment, set-top boxes, gaming systems, telecom, computing peripherals and systems permanently requiring power, will benefit greatly from the light load efficiency of the XRP7675.

"The XRP7675 complements our recently released XRP7674, a 2A high efficiency regulator," said Eric Pittana, director of marketing, Power Product Line, Exar. "Whether performance or cost, power engineers may now optimize their selection of highly efficient always on point-of-load solutions."

Efficiency ranges from 85% at a load of 30mA to as high as 95% up to 3A. The XRP7675 operates at a fixed 340 kHz switching frequency, with output voltage adjustable down to 0.925V with +/- 2% accuracy across the entire operating range. A dedicated enable pin and programmable soft start provide design flexibility for any point-of-load supply. Built-in current limit, output over voltage and thermal shutdown protection provide the XRP7675 with fail-safe operations. The XRP7675 is a pin and function upgrade to Exar's XRP7665.

The XRP7675 is available now. The XRP7675 comes standard in a RoHS compliant, Halogen Free Thermally Enhanced 8-Pin SOIC Package. Pricing for the XRP7675, in 1,000 unit quantities, starts at $1.05 per unit.
