Elna Develops DSK609, Double-Layer Capacitor

December 06, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Elna Co. Ltd. (Yokohama, Japan) has developed a new, coin-type electrical double-layer capacitor, called DSK609, with a rated voltage of 3.3V and a capacitance of 0.07F. Elna claims that the DSK609, which is 6.8mm in diameter and 0.9mm thick, is able to maintain a high performance level after numerous charges and discharges, and that it is easily disposable.

The thickness of the DSK609 is said to be less than half of the company's existing capacitor of the same type. Elna maintains that it succeeded in creating the thin capacitor by developing a sealant using “super engineering plastics."

Elna plans to start sampling the new capacitor, which it envisions as a backup power source for cellular phones, in the spring of 2001.
