Dual-Port Gigabit Ethernet PoE Network Interface Card

April 06, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Point Grey Research, Inc. announced the addition of a new GigE power-over-ethernet (PoE) network interface card to its growing ecosystem of Gigabit Ethernet cameras and accessories. The new two-port GIGE-PCIE2-2P02 network interface card (NIC) is fully designed and manufactured by Point Grey at the company's headquarters in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Each port provides up to 15.4 watts of power and has a dedicated Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet Controller that supports jumbo packets and maximum GigE bandwidth of 120 MByte/s.

Combined bandwidth of 240 MByte/s is easily handled using the card's PCI Express Gen2 x1 interface, the most commonly available on modern PC motherboards, and the low-profile board design makes the GIGE-PCIE2-2P02 ideal for 1U, 2U and other small form factor enclosures. The cost-effective design allows customers to use a single 2-port GIGE-PCIE2-2P02 card to replace multiple GigE NICs and PoE injectors and achieve savings up to 60 percent.

Point Grey's FlyCapture SDK includes a proprietary low-level GigE image filter driver that can be installed on the GIGE-PCIE2-2P02 and can be used to reduce GigE packet load on the CPU by filtering out GigE Vision stream protocol (GVSP) packets. The GIGE-PCIE2-2P02 is compatible with all Point Grey Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet cameras, as well as third-party devices, and presents a significant cost advantage over competing two-port NICs.
