di/dt Inc. Debuts the QL48 Family of Quarter-Brick Sub-Volt DC/DC Converters

July 01, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

di/dt Inc. announced its new QL48 family of dc/dc converters, claimed to be the industry's first quarter-bricks designed specifically to power low-voltage silicon devices in telecommunications, data communications and server applications. The QL48 converters provide single-stage conversion from a 48V bus to sub-volt levels. They are available in standard output voltages of 1.2V, 1.0V and 0.8V, and deliver a full 30A of output current with no derating up to ambient temperatures of 70 degrees C at an airflow as low as 100LFM.

The QL48 family, like di/dt's Q Series, comes in an open-frame package that does not require a heatsink. The converters measure 1.45in x 2.3in, with a height as low as 0.26in. They weigh 27g and are available in a surface-mount version, the QL48S30, as well as in an industry-standard through-hole format, the QL48T30. They meet the basic insulation requirements of EN60950, and come with input under-voltage lockout; thermal shutdown; remote on/off; output-voltage adjust pin; and output over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit protections.

"di/dt is proud to introduce the QL48 family," commented Dr. Apurba Roy, president and CEO of the company. "As silicon core voltages continue to drop, power requirments become increasingly demanding. Most dc/dc converters in the industry struggle to deliver down to 1.5V, while at the same time, silicon manufacturers are announcing that next-generation silicon will need to operate at 1V or less. Our QL48 family, with its ability to operate down to 0.8V, addresses the power requirements of tomorrow's microprocessor and DSP chips today."

In quantities of 1,000 pieces, the QL48 family is priced at $92. Samples are currently available, with production scheduled for August 2001.
