Delta Electronics and Primarion Ship Samples of DXP 30

September 14, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Delta Electronics Inc. (Taipei, Taiwan), a developer of power system solutions, in conjunction with Primarion Inc. (Tempe, AZ), a mixed-signal semiconductor company that provides digital control of power solutions, announced shipment of the first samples of their latest power technology breakthrough product, the Digital X-Power 30 (DXP 30). Though the DXP 30 product was developed to address the demands of increased current and power densities in networking applications, while also providing flexibility for system configurations, its benefits can easily be applied to other applications.

The DXP 30 is a building block for a new open digital power architecture, developed with Primarion's latest digital multiphase PWM controller. The DXP 30 boasts a useable (55 C/200 LFM) current density of 60 A/in² and a power density of up to 216 W/in³. Measuring 0.5 in x 0.5 in x 1.0 in and rated at 30 A of output current, the DXP 30 is designed to operate from an input voltage of 7 V to 11 V, and provides adjustable output voltages from 0.8 V to 2.5 V in digitally defined step resolutions of 1.62 mV. Multiple DXP 30's may be used in parallel to serve applications where output currents are in excess of 30 A, with limitations imposed only by the control circuit, analog or digital. Primarion's digital power controller provides system level control and monitoring for the requirements of computing, graphics, and networking applications.

Delta Electronics DC-DC ODM Business Director Fu-Sheng Tsai stated, "The DXP 30 provides yet another successful example of how Delta is able to mobilize with their technology partners to utilize all resources and technologies at our disposal to swiftly come up with power solutions, not only meeting all of our customer's systems needs, but also raising to the challenges of meeting both an extremely aggressive design schedule and competitive price/performance goals."

Primarion President and CEO Ron Van Dell added, "Primarion is pleased to collaborate on the breakthrough DXP 30 product with a world leader in the power supply industry, Delta Electronics. The new digital power architecture provides system configuration, full loop control, as well as monitoring and supervisory functions through a digital bus. Leveraging these innovations, the DXP 30 solution delivers increased accuracy, real-time intelligence, and simplified system design, while achieving a lower system cost than analog-based solutions. Additionally, system designers will benefit from our flexible architecture, which also enables optimized performance for specific applications."

Additional information on the Digital X-Power 30 product, including data sheets, application notes, and OEM pricing, will be available in the fourth quarter of 2005.
