Darnell Updates Portable Power Pack Market Study

July 23, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

The Darnell Group Inc. (Corona, CA) announced the release of its updated fourth-edition study, "Power Packs for Portable Electronic Devices: Worldwide Forecasts, Applications, Chemistries, Threats and Competitive Environment." The study discusses the moderate business growth and economic trends over the next five years of the overall battery/power pack market.

This 298-page report provides a comprehensive analysis of portable battery/power pack market characteristics, including forecasts and trends for "micro fuel cells," which could pose the most serious threat to lithium-ion battery technologies. Included are discussions of economic factors driving battery/power pack market growth; application trends of portable devices, with a specific focus on 3G, device convergence and chemistry trends; and technology threats to portable battery packs, such as fuel cells.

Over 100 tables give dollar and unit forecasts by region (Europe, North America, Asia, Central and Latin America, and Worldwide); architecture (smart versus dumb); chemistry (lithium-ion, lithium-polymer, nickel-metal hydride, nickel-cadmium and fuel cells); and application (camcorders, cordless phones, digital cameras, mobile phones, notebook computers, PDAs, power tools and other). In addition, pricing forecasts are broken out by chemistry and form factor (cylindrical and prismatic) for both the battery pack and the electronics.

Finally, 35 companies in the battery pack and fuel cell markets are profiled, including market share by chemistry. Two appendices identify the latest product challenges and trends for rechargeable batteries, along with an update on the commercial status of fuel cells for portable devices.
