Buck DC-DC Switching Converter IP Targets Low-power ASICs

August 06, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Vidatronic Inc. today announces the VBUCK400T110, a buck dc-dc switching converter IP core in the TSMC 110nm CMOS process. The VBUCK400T110 is optimized for microprocessor, application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), and system-on-a-chip (SOC) integration. The Buck IP core can be used to implement dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) for modern microchips. This switching converter IP expands Vidatronic's product offering to cover all power management applications for their clients in mobile and wearable electronic devices.

The VBUCK400T110 IP core provides up to 400mA of load current and can achieve up to 93% power efficiency. The maximum load current and output voltage can be adjusted to meet customers’ needs. The buck dc-dc converter uses a voltage square (V2) mode controller to provide fast transient response while using a simple frequency compensation scheme. The nominal regulator IP core switching frequency is between 1 and 1.5 MHz.

“The VBUCK400T110 has been optimized for high power efficiency as well as for ease of integration into our customers’ products,” states Brittany Eckmann, Strategic Technical Marketing Manager of Vidatronic. “Ultimately, we want to be able to provide our customers with a comprehensive power management IP collection that matches their individual needs with the level of performance they want and expect.”

Summary of features includes: TSMC 110nm process; 400mA maximum load current; 93% maximum power efficiency; <5mV typical output voltage ripples at 100mA; Includes staggered pads and ESD; 2.5V or 3.3V input power supply; Soft-start and soft-stop; Power-on-reset (POR); Over-current and high-temperature protection; Testability features; Programmable output voltage; and uses 3 small external components (one inductor and two capacitors).

“While we have this specific IP readily available, we can easily customize the IP to match individual customer needs,” Eckmann added. “Our talented team of engineers here at Vidatronic works quickly to meet just about any client need in a very short amount of time. We know how important time to market is for our customers and we’re here to make sure everything runs smoothly in regards to their power management.”
