Bidirectional Port Protection for AC-DC Power Line Applications

March 03, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Bourns, Inc. today announced the introduction of new high-power TVS diodes that feature high-current bidirectional port protection and meet industry standards including IEC 61000-4-5 8/20 µs current surge requirements. Designated Bourns models PTVS10-058C-TH and PTVS10-076C-TH, this new series of high-power TVS diodes provides very-high surge current protection with a peak pulse current rating of 10kA and feature 58V and 76V standoff voltages, respectively. Designed using advanced silicon technology Bourns' new models deliver lower clamping voltage under surge compared to Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) technology.

“Bourns Power TVS diodes are increasingly requested by customers that require robust circuit protection against power line surges and indirect lightning strikes in dc power bus clamping applications,” said Ben Huang, Semiconductor Product Line Manager at Bourns, Inc. “These two new models offer lower clamping voltage under surge to provide a highly reliable solution that meets the protection and industry standards requirements of high power applications.”

As a pricing reference, the Bourns models PTVS10-058C-TH and PTVS10-076C-TH TVS diodes are priced at $18.92 each in 10-piece quantities and $15.33 each in 500-piece quantities, respectively. Both models are available now in through-hole packaging and meet industry standards for Pb free solder reflow profiles for lead free packaging and are RoHS compliant.
