Beacon Power Signs Agreement for First 20MW Frequency Regulation Plant
Beacon Power Corp. announced that it has signed a contract with Carter & Burgess Consultants, Inc., to provide architectural, design, and engineering services to produce the plans and drawings for Beacon’s first 20MW frequency regulation plant.
The availability of comprehensive facility drawings and documentation will allow Beacon to pursue real estate, third-party supplier, and other contractual relationships on a national or site-specific basis, as part of the rollout of its frequency regulation plants. The design and engineering work, which is part of a $752,000 contract awarded to Beacon by the U.S. Department of Energy in October 2006 (administered by Sandia National Laboratories) is scheduled for completion in September 2007.
Beacon Power’s patented flywheel energy storage systems are designed to provide a non-polluting, long-life alternative to conventional fossil-fuel plants for frequency regulation. Beacon plans for its frequency regulation plants to be LEED certified, thus adding sustainable value and reducing the environmental footprint of each facility. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance "green" buildings. The primary electrical and mechanical engineers for Carter & Burgess on this project are LEED-accredited professionals.
As part of the project, Carter & Burgess will provide estimating, value engineering and scheduling services to optimize the cost-effectiveness of the plant. The work is being performed by a team based in multiple Carter & Burgess locations.
