AVX Intros Improved BestCap Supercapacitors

March 30, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

AVX Corp. (Myrtle Beach, SC) announced advances to its BestCap™ Series of electrochemical supercapacitors. Based on the combination of high capacitance and ultra-low ESR (down to 25 milliOhms), the BestCap devices offer high-power pulse characteristics. Applications include wireless telecom, memory backup, wireless alarm systems, hybrid battery packs, laser systems, automatic meter-reading systems and mainframe computer decoupling. The BestCap devices offer high capacitance, even with short-pulse duration regimes, making it suitable for all wireless communication products.

Standard voltage specifications for the BestCap devices are 3.5V, 5.5V, 7V, 9V and 12V with available capacitance values between 22mF and 560mF. ESR values range from 350 milliOhms to 25 milliOhms and maximum leakage current from 5µA to 40µA, depending on size. Package options include footprints of 28mm x 17mm and 48mm x 30mm with a low profile down to 2.1mm in height.

Standard pricing for the BestCap ranges from $3.50 to $12 in 1,000-piece quantities depending on voltage and size value. The device is currently available from stock to six weeks.
