AVS Receives Order from City of Tempe for 31 Hybrid-Electric Buses
August 29, 1999 by Jeff Shepard
Advanced Vehicle Systems Inc. (AVS, Chattanooga, TN) recently received an order for 31 hybrid-electric buses from the City of Tempe, Arizona. The order reportedly has an option for up to 169 more buses, which are powered by MicroTurbines built by Capstone Turbine Corp. The order is the largest hybrid-electric bus order ever placed, according to AVS. The buses will be fueled with liquefied natural gas and enable driving ranges of more than 150 miles without recharging. AVS previously built three battery-electric buses for Tempe, which will be converted to hybrid drivetrains within the next 60 days.
