Astris Energi to Start Powerstack Fuel Cell Production

December 30, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Astris Energi Inc. (Mississauga, ON), a developer of alkaline fuel cell technology, announced that it has secured funding to begin pilot production of its Powerstack power module in January. Astris says its major technological breakthrough is the use of inexpensive materials for fuel cell construction, eliminating expensive platinum used in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.

Astris has budgeted $2.9 million for the startup and operation of the pilot plant over a three-year period, and plans to secure the balance required in the course of the first half of 2004.
