Astec Intros AK40/42A High-Density DC/DC Converters

July 08, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Astec (Carlsbad, CA) recently introduced its new AK40/42A Series of high-density dc/dc converters optimized for embedded applications. The AK40A is an ultra-compact high power density (15W/cu.in.) converter that operates from either 24Vdc or 48Vdc input to provide single-output voltages of 1.5, 1.8, 2.1, 2.5, 5.0 or 12Vdc. The AK42 Series is intended to address the market trend for low-output voltages by providing dual-output voltages of 1.8 and 2.5Vdc, 5 and 3.3Vdc or 3.3 and 2.5Vdc. This converter, with both dual and load-sharing outputs, is claimed to provide a bridge for applications that are transitioning from one voltage to another."Our new series AK40/42A converters have been specially developed to address our customers' demands for a 'manufacturing process compatible device' that improves their overall reliability and system cost," stated Mark Rice, marketing director of dc/dc module solutions. "This converter eliminates the need for multiple assembly processes typically associate with through-hole devices." Features of the AK40/42A Series also include input differential and common mode filtering; hot insertable with inrush current limit; input under-voltage lockout with hysteresis; output over-voltage protection; remote shutdown; and load-sharing on dual-output models. These convection-cooled devices feature an operating temperature range from -40 to +75 degrees C with storage temperature tolerance from -55 to +125 degrees C. The AK40/42A converters meet EN55022, CISPR22 and FCC Class A specifications for conducted noise. All models are UL recognized, CSA certified and compliant with IEC950 and CB52719-106 specs. The AK40/42A converters are priced from $45 in OEM quantities.
