Astec Announces New Net Series of Low-Power Switchers

March 26, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Astec (Carlsbad, CA) announced the addition of new models to its popular Net Series of low-power switchers featuring compact packaging that make them, according to Astec, power solutions suitable for 1U (1.75") rack installations and other low-profile applications.

With active PFC to minimize input harmonic distortion, the new NTQ160 models accept universal ac input (85Vac to 264Vac) and offer 4Vdc output power with 30CFM forced air. The U-channel switchers are 1.5" high, have a compact footprint of 4.25" x 8.5", and can be set up for lengthwise or crosswise airflow, giving designers layout flexibility. They include a built-in, Class B EMI filter; remote sense; and single-wire parallel on the two primary outputs that enables current-sharing to balance loads. The dc output voltage selections include +2.5V, +3.3V, +5V, +12V and -12V depending on the model. The two main outputs are wide-range adjustable from 1.8V to 5.5V. A 5V standby output provides 2A to logic boards and other circuitry that require 5V to start.

The devices also feature overload and over-voltage protection as well as thermal overload protection. NTQ models have an operating temperature range of 0 degree to 50 degrees C without derating and can function up to 70 degrees C by derating each output 2.5 percent per degree C.

Priced from $135 in OEM quantities, production quantities are available now for the NTQ165 model, while evaluation samples will be available in June 2000 for the NTQ162 and NTQ163 models.
