February 27, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL) recently introduced the AFE2000 Series of front-end, 2,000W, ac/dc power supplies and the accompanying AFS4000 power shelf. The AFE2000 Series is designed for networking, telecom and computer applications that use distributed architectures.

The AFE2000 offers output voltages of 48Vdc, 54Vdc and 56Vdc. The device comes in a 4.9" x 6.8" package that is compatible with most rack-mount distributed power systems, according to Artesyn. With the 5.25" (3U) high AFS4000 power shelf, the power modules can be configured to form an off-the-shelf, redundant, hot-pluggable power system that houses two AFE2000 modules and fits into standard 19" wide cabinets.

The AFE2000 complies with EN61000-3-2 and also meets FCC Level B noise compliance requirements through EMI filtering. The device also has full international safety approval, including EN60950 and cUL1950. All models in the series contain a range of standard features, including N+1 redundancy, active current sharing, LED diagnostic indicators, over-temperature and over-voltage protection, and current limiting. The AFE2000 is also available with remote enabling, auxiliary output, voltage margining and current monitoring.

In quantities of 100, pricing for the AFE2000 Series is $0.45/W and the AFS4000 power shelf is $662 each. Both can be ordered with 12-week lead times.
