Artesyn Expands Typhoon Family with New Converters

June 17, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Artesyn Technologies Inc. (Boca Raton, FL), a leader in power conversion solutions for the communications industry, launched two new 5 V, single-output, eighth-brick dc-dc converters, which provide conversion efficiencies of 92%. Forming the latest additions to the company's Typhoon™ family of board-mounted, power conversion products, the new converters are available with current ratings of 10 A and 15 A now, and 20 A in the near future, enabling designers to choose the most cost-effective model for their particular application. The converters are suitable for the latest-generation telecom switches and optical metro routers.

The new eighth-brick converters feature a wide input-voltage range of 36 Vdc to 75 Vdc, and generate a single 5 V isolated output, adjustable over the 4 V to 5.5 V range via a single external resistor. The converters feature remote sense and remote on/off facilities as standard, and have a typical startup time of 10 ms when driving a resistive load. The new 5 V output models have an industry-standard 0.9 in x 2.3 in (22.9 mm x 58.4 mm) footprint, and are based on an open-frame, single-board package designed for through-hole mounting. Extensive use of surface-mount components and planar, in-the-board transformer structures minimizes device profile, allowing the installed height to be kept to just 0.3 in (7.6 mm).

The 5 V eighth-brick converters are designed for operation over an ambient temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C without a heatsink. The ultra-low-profile construction minimizes airflow disruption and makes them suitable for both convection-cooled and forced-air environments. The converters feature under-voltage lockout, as well as non-latching over-voltage protection, and are also protected against short-circuit and over-temperature conditions, with automatic recovery. The converters carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 VDE and UL/cUL60950.

Sample quantities of Artesyn's 5 V eighth-brick converters rated at 10 A and 15 A are available for immediate delivery, and the standard lead time for quantity orders is stock to 12 weeks. Pricing for 1,000-piece quantities starts at $49.50 for the 10 A part, and $57.56 for the 15 A version.
