APC Expands Redundant Switch

May 05, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

American Power Conversion (West Kingston, RI) has further expanded its APC Redundant Switch, which was previously accessible only in a SmartUPS 1400/High Availability package. The Redundant Switch is now available as an independent solution, offering greater flexibility to work with a broader selection of existing APC SmartUPS uninterruptible power supplies, according to APC. The Redundant Switch family is now made up of four models for North America, increasing the flexibility to utilize SmartUPS models ranging from 700 to 3000VA in 120V and 208V environments.APC's Redundant Switch requires only 1U of rack space, and works with servers running either Windows NT or Microsoft Cluster server technology running Windows NT, Novell Netware or Sun Solaris. It monitors the print quality from both the primary and redundant UPS, each of which can be plugged into separate ac circuits. APC's Redundant switch automatically switches the load to the redundant Smart-UPS when it detects a potential disruption to the load, such as during a severe power event. The Redundant Switch also communicates UPS status and alarm messages to PowerChute plus UPS management software, which in turn alerts IT professionals that it detects a problem and proactively switches to a redundant UPS. This additional layer of protection ensures that the server is protected by a mirrored UPS configuration which extends redundancy into power protection for missing critical customers.APC's 1400VA and 3000VA Redundant switches are now available in North America. The list prices of the 1400VA and 3000VA redundant switches are $415 and $580, respectively. www.apcc.com
