Alpha & Omega Semi Extends EZBuck™ DC-DC Converter Family

December 25, 2007 by Jeff Shepard

Alpha & Omega Semiconductor, Inc. (AOS) extended their EZBuck™ family of products with two new buck regulators. The AOZ1210 and AOZ1212 feature a wide input voltage range of 4.5 to 27V and are rated at 2A and 3A, respectively. The new products are well suited for powering a wide range of networking, consumer, and industrial applications such as cable and DSL modems, set-top boxes, portable navigation devices, portable DVD players, DVD recorders, LCD TVs, and industrial control systems.

"Many systems have multiple voltage rails available such as 5, 12, and 24V that need to be stepped down to power lower voltage circuits. This wide voltage range creates a challenge for power designers who are looking for a single dc-dc solution that can be used for all input voltage rails. With its 4.5 to 27V input operating range, AOS’ new EZBuck™ family provides a single versatile solution, thus reducing design complexity and development time," said Ralph Monteiro, Director of Power IC Marketing at AOS. "In addition, when compared to competing solutions, the new products can offer up to 2% higher efficiency in typical conversions from 24V input to 5V output."

The new devices are current-mode PWM step down regulators with an integrated high side NMOS switch. AOS’ discrete MOSFET technology enables RDS(ON) as low as 70mΩ, thus reducing power losses. The duty cycle can be adjusted from 6 to 85% allowing a wide range of output voltages with minimum output voltages as low as 0.8V.

The new offerings feature a TTL compatible enable input and also have a fixed internal soft start time of 4µs. The devices are protected with features such as input under-voltage lockout, cycle-by-cycle current limit and thermal shutdown.

The AOZ1210 is available in SO-8 package while the AOZ1212 is available in both SO-8 and DFN5x4-8L package options. The DFN package has improved thermal performance allowing operation in higher ambient temperature conditions.
