Allegro MicroSystems Debuts the A8906CLB Motor Controller/Driver IC

July 14, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Allegro MicroSystems Europe (UK) debuted the A8906CLB, a bi-directional, three-phase, brushless dc motor controller/driver IC with back-EMF sensing. The new device incorporates self-contained, back-EMF sensing motor startup and running algorithms. A programmable digital frequency-locked loop speed-control circuit, together with linear current-control circuitry, provides motor-speed regulation. The device's serial port allows the user to program various features and modes of operation, such as the speed-control parameters, rotational direction, start-up current limit, sleep mode and diagnostic modes.

The A8906CLB circuit includes three half-bridge outputs based on low on-resistance DMOS devices, each capable of driving up to 1A. The circuit is supplied in a 24-lead, wide-body, SOIC, batwing package for surface mounting.
