Alcatel Debuts MTC-80901/80902/80904 Devices

April 16, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Alcatel (Paris, France) announced its new MTC-80901/80902/80904 family of single-chip, lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery-protection ICs. With small dimensions (width 3.5mm) it is suitable for ultra-slim battery packs needed for small products such as headsets or ultra-flat mobile phones.

Each product is available in two alternative packages. The three-terminal, direct weldable package is a new packaging technology allowing for direct mounting in a battery pack by means of contact welding, soldering or gluing, resulting in easy assembly into the battery pack and smaller dimensions. The product is also available in an ultra-small, quad-flat, non-lead package for mounting on a PCB.

The MTC-80901/80902/80904 product family meets the requirement for the protection of single-cell, lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery packs. The chips offer full battery-protection functionality without the need for any external components. Furthermore, the products feature an integral temperature sensor, eliminating the need for a poly-switch.

First samples of the new chip are available to the OEM market and battery manufacturers. Volume production will be under way during third-quarter 2002.
