ADI unveils Ultra-low-power Boost Regulator for Energy Harvesting

April 02, 2014 by Jeff Shepard

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) introduced today the industry's most efficient ultra-low-power boost regulator for photovoltaic and thermoelectric energy harvesting systems. The ADP5090 ultra-low-power boost regulator represents a significant leap forward in energy harvesting technology by delivering efficient conversion of the harvested power (as low as 10 uW) with sub-uW operational losses that stores the maximum amount of energy for future operation. Harnessing "indoor" ambient light as a viable power source has become a growing trend in wireless sensor network applications worldwide.

ADP5090 key features include: Optimizes efficient conversion of harvested limited power down to 10 µW – 1-mW range with best in class sub-µW operation losses; Programmable maximum power point tracking with open circuit voltage sensing ensures most energy extracted from harvester; 250-nA quiescent current in deep-sleep mode prolongs operation time with minimized loss of ambient energy; and Integrated charge pump circuitry enables cold start at 380-mV input voltage with no energy on system node.

Additional specifications include: Ultra-low quiescent current hysteretic boost regulator for best ultra-light load efficiency ( Iq (sys) MINOP voltage and Iq (sys) < 250 nA when CBP voltage < MINOP voltage); Input voltage operation range from 100 mV (minimum) to 3.3 V (maximum); Cold start from 380 mV (typical) with charge pump; Programmable MPPT ratio for PV or TEG energy sources with open voltage sensing(OCV); Programmable shutdown point on MINOP pin based on VIN OCV level; Programmable voltage monitor (2 V to 5.3 V) to support charging different storage; and Optional power path management if a backup primary cell battery is connected to BACK_UP. The ADP5090 is available now and costs $2.50 each in lots of 1,000 pieces. It is packaged in a 3-mm x 3-mm 16-lead LFCSP.
