Active Power Unveils Expanded CleanSource Systems

November 24, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Active Power Inc. (Austin, TX), a developer of battery-free, power quality products, has enhanced its CleanSource DC line of battery-free, energy storage systems to include expanded power levels and incorporate several changes in the evolving product line. Based on Active Power's flywheel technology, the new models provide tightly regulated, adjustable dc voltage to replace or augment batteries configured with uninterruptible power supply systems backing up critical applications in the 100kW to 2,000kW power ranges.

The new and enhanced models are available with unit power ratings of 100kW, 140kW, 200kW, 250kW, 425kW and 500kW, and can be paralleled in combinations up to 2,000kW. The new models accept an input float voltage from 400Vdc to 600Vdc to supply a charging current of 15A to 100A per flywheel. User-adjustable output voltage can be set from 360Vdc to 550Vdc with &plsumn;1% steady-state voltage regulation. Unlike batteries that must be maintained as close as possible to 20°C to avoid performance degradation, the CleanSource DC models are designed to operate comfortably from 0°C to 40°C.
