50W ac/dc universal input power supply

October 03, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Ericsson (Sweden) announced that is has recently developed a new 50W ac/dc universal input power supply designed as a low-cost front end to high-reliability distributed power applications in communications, networking, computer and telecom equipment. The PLX 5516 is available with either 24V or 48V output and uses proprietary enhanced flyback topology which contributes to the MTBF of more than 300 years, according to Ericsson. Ericsson claims that the open-frame design achieves 85 percent efficiency within a footprint of only 55mm x 133mm, achieving a high-power density for free-convection cooling of 3.6W per cu. in. Heatsink and fans are not required, reducing space and cost. The PLX 5516 is a fully isolated unit, which is over-voltage and short-circuit proof, is rated to deliver full power from +5 degrees C to +45 degrees C. The PLX 5516 also features high-surge resistance 6kV at the input and meets international EMC requirements including EN 61000 and EN 55022.Opto-isolated primary/secondary feedback enables the PLX 5516 to produce less than 0.1 percent rms psophometric ripple with a dynamic regulation of +/-2 percent for +/-25 percent load change. The PLX 5516 is designed to deliver full power at any input from 90V to 253V and at any frequency from 45Hz to 66Hz. Custom-engineered versions are available for volume applications. The PLX 5516 will be priced at $39.50 in quantities of 500 and stock samples are currently available.
