1A LDO regulator for 3.3V to 2.5V conversion

October 31, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Micrel Semiconductor Inc. (San Jose, CA) recently introduced what it claims is the world's smallest 1A low-dropout (LDO) regulator for 3.3V to 2.5V conversion. The device, MIC39100, is manufactured in the SOT-223 package and has less than 500mV of dropout. The low dropout voltage was designed for powering 2.5V circuitry in systems with a 3.3V power bus. These regulators have 500mV dropout under all conditions at 1.5A, 3A and 5A respectively. The MIC39100 is the only 1A LDO with less than 1V dropout voltage, available in the SOT-223 package, said Lisa Wong, product marketing engineer for LDOs. This combination of dropout voltage and small packaging makes the MIC39100 a very attractive solution for applications with minimum input-output headroom and PCB area limitation. In quantities of 1,000, pricing for the MIC39100 starts at $1.58 each. Samples are currently available.
